A short, paved meander through sub-alpine meadows at the foot of Mount Baker's ice-clad slopes. In August, heather blooms carpet the hillsides in deep magenta. The loop passes two mountain lakes with direct glacier reflections on calm mornings. A rare trail where the scenery punches well above the effort.

Highlights

  • Heather bloom peak in August — magenta hillsides
  • Glacier reflections on Bagley and Picture Lakes
  • Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan in the same frame at the viewpoint
  • Ptarmigan flock frequents the meadow in late summer

Trail tips

  • Free to hike; a small parking fee applies on summer weekends
  • Artist Point opens mid-July — check road status before driving up
  • Bring layers — elevation is 4,200 ft and wind is constant
  • Goes fast in snow; can be done on snowshoes Oct – June
